Last year I started playing bass for Afrikaans music artist Casper Ace who plays an eclectic blend of classic rock, country, blues, pop rock and latin-jazz. Upon recommendation of my good friend Maya Spector (also a prolific solo artist in her own right) who sings backing in Casper’s band, we went to Sunset Studios and recorded with successful recording engineer Jürgen von Wechmar. On drums was top session drummer Tim Rankin (Karen Zoid, Hot Water, Bed on Bricks etc), which was a big treat for me – since it’s always good to play with musicians who are better and more experienced than you are. The keyboard work was done by the amazing Melissa van der Spuy (Karen Zoid, Marcus Wyatt etc), with Vincent Espi on violin and Adriaan Brand (Springbok Nude Girls) doing trumpet and horn arrangements. The album is in the post-production phase at the moment, so it’s gonna be cool to hear the final product.
The following video is a live recording of our first performance together as a band at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheater on the Day of Goodwill, recorded by Chris Ras and Aya Ishii of Ripple Motion Media. We were joined by Mike Thorn on keyboard.
