Bad Sound Disappoints at Level 42 Show

Level 42

Level 42

Can you believe I’ve forgotten this whole week to update this blog? I think I’ve been mad busy since last week Friday when I last updated it. Last Friday night I attended the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and got to see a really hip new jazz band called Snarky Puppy (they recently won a Grammy award) – they were a real treat. I also got to see one of my favourite bands Level 42 – although the sound on the stage they played on was remarkably horrid. It came as no surprise though since I’ve seen both Earth, Wind & Fire and Sergio Mendes play on that stage in previous years – and they both pretty much sucked because of it. Even Mark King (lead singer and bassist of Level 42) thought the sound was whack. For a band so loaded with technically awesome basslines, you couldn’t hear a smidgen of bass – all you heard was a hum and some vague keyboards here and there. I also managed to see a bit of Jonas Gwangwa and a little bit of Shakatak – not too much to write home about there.

On Saturday I saw one of my friends Michael who’s a dancer perform in his first play (granted he’s only been dancing properly for the last two year, a late bloomer). Although I don’t think you’d notice his lack of experience. The play was a dance rendition of Oliver Twist at the Magnet Theatre.

On Sunday evening I performed at the monthly Kuila Expression Session as run by Jerome Rex. I did a new song I wrote last week called First Mate – people seemed to dig it!

I’ve literally been consistently busy writing articles for the latest installment of B’Jazz magazine. For this issue I’m covering Pops Mohamed, Errol Dyers and Spencer Mbadu – local legends. I just submitted the Mohamed one.
