My First Chalk Pastel Drawing Since High School
Last weekend I sat down with some chalk pastels and went crazy. I had initially planned to contact a very talented illustrator friend of mine to do a design for a jazz jam session that I will be hosting every Sunday afternoon from later this month, but time got the better of me. I was left with under a day to do something. Running with the idea of doing a magazine photo collage, what I wanted to capture didn’t really work as expected – so I took pastel to paper and improvised.
Not many people know this, but when I was in high school I was the top achiever in the Western Cape (if not the country) for standard grade art – receiving 100% for my overall matric mark and final exhibition, which was somewhat of a miracle. At that stage I had it in my mind to become a graphic designer, but the theatre and music bug bit me and I ended up studying that instead. Neither my drama or music career has really taken off – so perhaps I should’ve actually studied design.
Anyway, for a first time after a long hiatus – I don’t think this is half bad. I’m hoping to do more provided I have more time.
