How it got Tasty at the Kuila Expression Session
Once a month, a performance event called the Kuila Expression Session – run by rapper Jerome Rex goes down in Kuilsriver. Although being underpinned by a strong hip hop sensibility, It usually integrates the performing talents of various artists from diverse backgrounds.
Jerome Invited me to perform at the June installment, but I could not attend since I was at the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival (on which my latest posts have been following) for the last four weeks).
This month’s event was well attended and featured performances by Jerome Rex, DJ Hearin’ Aid, DJ Eazy (Brother & Brother‘s regular collaborator), singer Ricardo Dyson, acapella vocal group A5, spoken word poet René van Niekerk, rapper Jayde Williams, spiritual dancer Chanelle Elliot, breakdancers Keith Knowledge and Bliksem Straal, and myself.
The event was hosted by poet/rapper NaMA Xam.
I have to say everyone’s performances were great, my favourite being Jerome’s performance of Smaaklik (Tasty) off his Jerome en Geselskap (Jerome and Company) EP, before which he gave an inspirational talk on what it means to be “Tasty” as a human being. Not in the edible sense, but in the sense of having a good attitude and demeanour – something that a lot of artists can truly learn from. Do people experience us as being tasty? You can see Jerome’s promo video for his crowd funded project below: Tasty indeed!
The second highlight of the night for me was the break dancing as done by Keith Knowledge and Bliksem Straal! This was so much fun that even the young kids proceeded to join in on the high octane dance moves!
Another impressive singer was Ricardo Dyson, whose powerful voice and sultry feel good R&B was a real treat!

Lastly, my portion of the night’s proceedings was great. My first item was Fruit Vendor (the song I wrote for the songwriting course I did earlier this year) and my second was Pencil Pusher Man which will be featured on my Brightly Clothed Boy EP, scheduled for release next year. The crowd response and vibe was really warm and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening!
