The image above is the poster design for my first festival show (under my own name) with my friend Raynard Stander (Reinhart Rymhard) doing jazz poetry and Sam Petersen directing. The show which is happening at Woordfees (Word Festival) is called Gemengde Oorsprong: Hemel in Aardse Kruike (Mixed Heritage: Heaven in Earthen Vessels). It was illustrated and designed by Roger Williams (of State of the Art Illustration), who has done work for artists like Gazelle, EJ Von Lyrik, Godessa and The Rudimentals.

It was very important to us to have a look and feel that captures the essence of the themes that we’re running with and since I’ve admired Roger’s work for a very long time now, I thought of no-one else who could capture the hip hop aesthetic as well; while simultaneously running with Woordfees 2013’s “Hemels (Heaven)” theme. In addition, Roger will be putting together a flash animation as a promo video which we’ll upload when it’s ready.

In the meantime, Raynie took the liberty of filming and editing the following live action video from behind the scenes at our first rehearsal. If you haven’t yet seen it, you can watch it below.

After this weekend’s rehearsal, I have to say I’m really looking forward to doing this show which has in effect been coming on since I approached Raynie with the idea for a theme called “Mixed Heritage” in 2010.

So far we have had quite a few people mention that they are willing to make reservations for the show – so that puts my mind at ease! Sometime this week, Sam and I will probably also go around sticking up the posters all over Stellenbosch.

I really wish that my WordPress readers were able to attend – I think you’d probably dig what we’re doing a lot – that’s if you could get passed the Afrikaans!
