Jazz at Delheim Wine Estate

Yesterday I played bass for a background music jazz gig at Delheim Wine Estate near Stellenbosch, alongside pianist Pierre-Henri Wicomb and drummer Annemie Nel. The restaurant at Delheim is very quaint. Although the weather generally plays a substantial role in affecting the turnout of such events, the rain didn’t deter anyone’s Sunday afternoon plans because the place was packed.

This was my second gig playing with Pierre-Henri, who is a monster pianist. With a flare for avant garde piano improvisations and jazz standards that I’ve never heard of before in my life, he makes the vibe very…relaxed. I also learnt that he is the son of famous Afrikaans crooner Randall Wicomb. Annemie is one of my favourite drummers and we’ve played many gigs together in the past. I’ll be playing with them on the 8th July again.

Apart from that, Delheim serves a great lamb shank. Til next time!
